In The News: Charm City Medicus — Responsible Healing
It is an honor to stand at the forefront of a nascent industry and expand patient access to medical cannabis. Most recently, Medicine Man Technologies (MMT) worked alongside Charm City Medicus, assisting them in the grand opening of their state-of-the-art medical dispensary located at 717 Northpoint Boulevard in Baltimore, Maryland.
On Friday, January 19, 2018, Charm City Medicus opened their doors to patients who pre-registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) and held their official grand opening on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Charm City Medicus had an extremely successful opening weekend where they served 450 patients. Congratulations on a job well done!
What Goes Into a Successful Launch
There are many moving parts to consider when opening a medical dispensary. The MMT team first developed a firm understanding of the regulations set forth by the MMCC to successfully implement their medical marijuana program. It is our job as industry leaders to understand and describe in detail how products are made, what are their anticipated effects and how these products interact throughout multiple systems in our body. And when training new dispensary operators, it is essential that they also develop an extensive understanding of the endocannabinoid system, the historical use of therapeutic cannabis, the pharmacology of the drug, indications for use, dosage and administration and potential risks and side effects.
Preserving public health and safety is at the forefront of our industry. Thus it is our job to educate and train the staff of a medical dispensary before they become operational, so they, in turn, can educate their patients and inform the public on the plant's medicinal benefits, safe usage instructions, forms and methods, and compliance with state and local law.
MMT deployed a team to Maryland to assist with training at Charm City Medicus, including Valerie Sandidge, Marisa Castricone, and Joel Tyberg, who each have extensive knowledge in dispensary operations. In preparation for this deployment, the team drew from our experience working on the front lines at the Medicine Man dispensary in Aurora, Colorado, as well as our years of dedication and advocacy to the cannabis cause. The team researched demographic data of surrounding communities, measures of disease frequency, which types of products will be available in the state of Maryland, as well as vendor credentials.
The team also ensured that all operating systems such as the point of sale system, seed to sale tracking system, and corresponding hardware were installed correctly and in proper working order. Drawing from our experience working on the front lines, the team assisted Charm City Medicus with the implementation of standard operating procedures. The team was able to offer the security team insight into the problems that Colorado has faced when it comes to diversion and the measures we have taken to implement effective diversion prevention techniques. The MMT team also issued guidance on inventory control methods, merchandising, marketing, product type, and accessories.
Valerie, Marisa, and Joel were also given the opportunity to meet with community members who were inquiring about the process to become a medical marijuana patient. Patient testimonials help bring the realities of the efficacy of cannabis and the cruelty of its prohibition to light. The community members exhibited a full spectrum of emotion while learning about the potential palliative medical benefits of cannabis use. The patients the team encountered suffer from a myriad of illnesses and debilitating diseases that conventional medicine cannot treat or even manage without severe side effects. The people seeking relief are grandparents, veterans, next door neighbor, teachers, lawyers and everyone in between.
A Responsible, Compassionate Road Forward
People fear what they do not understand; this is evident in the long-term use of negative propaganda against cannabis, despite the fact that the use of cannabis as a healing medicine minimally dates as far back as 2900 B.C. Mary Lynn Mathre explained that “The paradigm for the war on drugs is based on a belief that there are ‘bad’ drugs and that the solution to our drug problems is to prohibit the use of these drugs. This basic premise is faulty and must be challenged. Clearly, irresponsible use of drugs, legal or illegal, can be dangerous and costly to society.”
At Medicine Man Technologies, we feel it’s upstanding businesses like Charm City Medicus who combat these dangerously unsafe misconceptions about both medicines and drugs by going to great lengths to ensure that patients are educated, have access to a safe, and consistent supply of medical marijuana. They show a deep responsibility to their patients, local community and the state of Maryland.
